WHAT IS REIKI?

Reiki is a Japanese word which literally translates into universal life force energy.

Reiki is defined as “a healing technique based on the principle that the therapist can channel energy into the patient by means of touch, to activate the natural healing processes of the patient’s body and restore physical and emotional well-being” (Oxford English Dictionary). Reiki works to balance the chakras to ensure energy flows through the body to maintain a healthy body and mind and it encourages the body to heal itself.

This is my very simple explanation of how reiki works is this. There is energy all around us that we are aware of which is why we have sayings such as ‘you could cut the atmosphere with a knife’ or ‘you could feel the tension in the room’. Reiki is positive energy which surrounds us all the time.

We also know that energy can enter the body through MRI, CT and ultrasound scans. Therefore, it is feasible that reiki energy can enter our bodies when directed by a reiki practitioner.

Reiki works to balance the chakras. In a healthy person or animal, energy flows around the body so all the chakras spin happily. The energy flows around the body like water flows through a hose but when there is a kink in that hose, water gets blocked and cannot flow. These kinks or blockages in the energy flow causes ill health both physically and emotionally.

All the chakras relate to the corresponding organs in that part of the body but also to emotions. For example, if the root chakra is balanced, you are likely to feel secure and grounded. If the solar plexus is not balanced, you may have a lack of self- confidence or self-esteem.
