HORSES

How can Reiki benefit my horse?

Looking for a treatment which can treat your entire horse in one treatment? Well, reiki is one of only a couple of treatments (the other being acupressure) which can do just that. Reiki treats musculoskeletal problems, emotional issues and conditions affecting the internal systems such as digestion so several conditions can be addressed during one session.

Reiki can assist with following and so much more:

  • Muscle issues particularly when the area is too sore to touch, or the horse does not enjoy massage stokes

  • Laminitis

  • Past trauma/negative experiences

  • Stress and anxiety

  • Digestion/Urinary tract/Respiration conditions

Reiki can be used on any horse or pony and for any reason whether that is to aid performance, to ease aches and pains or to improve digestive problems.  I think Reiki has a particular benefit for older horses or those with mobility issues as they do not have to move or lift a limb during the treatment.

Past trauma and negative experiences

Unfortunately, there are many horses and ponies who have experienced past trauma or experiences that now impact on their emotional wellbeing.  Reiki can assist them to overcome these and can unblock or release emotions which may be present in their body and mind.  Because reiki can be given from a distance, if you have a horse which is very stressed or aggressive, they can be treated equally as effectively from over the stable door when compared to a hands-on treatment.

What can I expect to see during a Reiki treatment?

Reiki is based on balancing the chakras so I would lightly place my hands in certain positions which are known to re-balance the chakras.  This technique would also be used to treat specific injury sites.  The beauty of Reiki is that you will see an immediate response.  Most horses find their Reiki treatment deeply relaxing and normal responses to releases include lowering their head and neck, being sleepy, chewing, licking their lips and shaking their heads.  A session usually lasts 1 hour but can vary.

How many treatments would be required?

Whilst there would be benefits to having a one-off treatment, the effects of Reiki are cumulative so when treating a specific condition/issue, it is likely that 3 or more sessions may be required. How frequently the sessions will be required will depend on the horse’s response and recovery.  Each case is assessed on an individual basis.

The sessions should take place when the yard is quiet to allow the horse to relax so feeding and turnout times should be avoided. As the horse will process the energy for 24 hours after their treatment, they should be allowed to have a quiet day following the treatment.

Disclaimer

Reiki is a safe complimentary therapy that works well alongside medical treatment.  It should not replace or act as an alternative to conventional treatments given by your vet.  If your horse displays any symptoms of illness, you should contact your vet.  Whilst there is no legal obligation to seek veterinary approval prior to a reiki treatment (unless your horse is currently being treated by a vet for a specific condition), it is advisable to ask your vet whether they have any objections to your horse receiving reiki especially if there are known medical conditions or if you have any concerns.  I am unable to diagnose conditions, give treatment plans or advice.
